Wine Tasting 45: 2004 Marquis Philips Sarah’s Blend fm Aus.

If you love full blown, upfront, loud New World wines then this is for you! Don’t get me wrong as I equally love a backward, sensual old world wine too. Like blonds and brunettes I love them all. There are occasions that I lust over new world wines and there are other moments I yearn over the liquid poetry of old world classics. The Marquis Philips wine is a joint project between overly talented Sarah and Sparky Marquis and Yankee importer Dan Philips. Doesn’t that give you a hint that something BIG is coming along the way? The Sarah’s Blend is a Pseudo-Bordeaux style blend but very un-Bordeaux like due to its very ‘new world’ style and it’s 60+% Shiraz content! The nose was assertive with showy concentrated ripe black current cassis, black plum intermixed with sweet vanilla spicy wood. In fact, the resemblance of a British Maynard black wine gum on the nose is profound! The full body wine was fruity, juicy, upfront and had much weight sitting on my tongue. Eucalyptus, cola, black licorice and dark chocolate to follow. The tannin was sweet and supple and the acid too was well balanced. The finish was generous but the alcohol (at 15%) finally emerged with some hotness. This wine can age for 5+ years. At Cad$20 for a $50 quality wine – a steal. US Viewers- this is even cheaper at discount stores!!! (Rating 91-93 points) by Michael Lam of the Beverage Review.

This a wide open question thus can lead to a very long answer…merlot is a good start as it’s usually quite soft, velvety and plummy. You need a wine that’s 1. can be drunk instantly (not meant to be aged); 2. fruity but not complex (As it’s easy to understand). The secret is to try many different varietals of grapes from different countries. Make notes / mental notes thus you build your data bank of what you prefer and what not.

I don’t know how to answer your question to be honest! You have thrown a VERY OPEND ENDED QUESTION. One usually is able to differentiate good wines and bad wines BUT good wines don’t mean that they are everyone’s palate. The best to do is to try out the recommendations from your local store and you judge whether you like it or not. You will eventually build your own database from experiencing them.

Hi.. i just recently discovered my interest w/ red wine.. what would you recommend that I try for an early wine drinker like me? I went to the local wine store and they referred a merlot / semi-sweet red wine.. is that a good choice? thanks!

The lag in sound could possibly occur because you’re uploading the clip as an AVI. I think if you convert to WMV (or MPEG) first, and _then_ upload, the sound should be in sync with the video.

I had that before too but I cannot remember much – it’s available here in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Perhaps I should try one again!

G’day mate, tasted a fantastic wine last night and I think you might wanna give it go. Devil’s Lair Cab Sauv…not often you’ll find a cool climate cab this solid. Not so tannic but quite mouth filling. Had it with Shanghainese and it was performing well.

I love sparkling wines – they are truly ‘adult fizzy pops’ – fun, sensual and straight to the head! I do buy and drink sparkling. The problem…The great ones are usually VERY EXPENSIVE (Vintage champagne) but most economical ones are drinkable but not ‘memory etching good’. I will taste some sparkling soonish…stay tuned!

Thanks – I have thought about it but I should invest on better camera equipments first. My little el-cheapo set up curently only allows me 3 minutes and no more and there is an annoying time lag in my voice when the videos are downloaded! Thank you again for your kind suggestion.
